As the first public mental health hospital in the United States, Eastern State Hospital traces its roots back to 1773. For centuries, the organization has devoted itself to the ethical care of Virginia’s mentally ill. Today, as part of the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, the hospital has evolved with a modern campus offering comprehensive mental health care with an emphasis on deinstitutionalization. Eastern State Hospital is the largest of Virginia’s eight adult mental health hospitals with 302 beds and serving 23% of the state’s adult psychiatric population.

Eastern State Hospital’s vision is to provide the highest quality services that empower individuals in their recovery.  The organization utilizes the Quality Assurance Performance Improvement (QAPI) program to measure results.  Senior leadership holds daily huddles to prioritize mission-related goals and discuss ways to improve performance results. In addition, the organization employs a variety of methods to ensure a safe environment and has an effective approach to managing the cost and efficiency of operations.
