SPQA recognized six organizations at its 2019 award ceremony in Richmond, Virginia. [Note: View all winners since the beginning of SPQA at https://www.spqa-va.org/past-award-winners/]
Three organizations were recognized in the SPQA Award program. The awards were determined by an independent panel of judges after review of the feedback reports submitted by the teams of examiners who worked for several months reviewing an organization’s application against the Baldrige Performance Excellence Framework. Our award-winning organizations:
Henrisa Tosoc-Haskell, Senior Director of Organizational Excellence, accepted the 2019 SPQA Achievement Award on behalf of United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS). UNOS is the private, non-profit organization that manages the nation’s organ transplant system. It coordinates the allocation of organs and provides oversight of safe, effective and efficient transplantation through policy development and monitoring as contracted by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), under the Department of Health and Human Services.
Daniel W. Lucas, Inspector General for the District of Columbia, accepted the 2019 SPQA Progress In Performance Excellence Award on behalf of the Government of the District of Columbia Office of the Inspector General. This executive branch agency conducts independent audits, inspections, and investigations of District government programs and operations, and provides oversight to 80 distinct District agencies and instrumentalities, over 20 independent District agencies, and hundreds of boards and commissions. The OIG ensures the District uses its budget efficiently and effectively, and provides results of its activities to the District’s 700,000 residents and 35,000 employees.
Captain Charles Ehnes accepted the 2019 SPQA Progress In Performance Excellence Award on behalf of the PMS 312 In-Service Aircraft Carrier Program. PMS 312 is part of the U.S. Navy’s Program Executive Office (PEO) for Aircraft Carriers, under the direction of Naval Sea Systems Command. The Congressional mandate to maintain a fleet of 11 aircraft carriers requires PEO Aircraft Carriers to simultaneously maintain the readiness and operational effectiveness of the in-service USS Nimitz-class aircraft carriers while managing the construction of next generation USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78)-class aircraft carriers. PMS 312 is tasked with in-service aircraft carrier maintenance and modernization, mid-life refueling and overhaul, as well as inactivation and decommissioning. This Senate Productivity and Quality Award honored PMS 312 for achieving excellence in maintaining the Nimitz-class aircraft carriers, following an intense, year-long self-assessment and independent process review. In accepting the award, Captain Ehnes said, “PMS 312 is constantly building a culture of excellence. The SPQA review process was no easy task, but the insights provided have been invaluable.”
In addition, two organizations were recognized for their participation in the SPQA Discovery program. This program is often a precursor to participation in the SPQA Award program.
- DuPont Community Credit Union (DCCU). Angela Bandy, Vice President of Accounting and Administration, accepted SPQA’s recognition of participation on behalf of DuPont Community Credit Union. DCCU seeks to be the premier provider of financial service. It is committed to excellence through relationships with its over 104,000 members, employees, and the community.
- Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association (VHHA). Joyce Dayvault, Director of Performance Improvement, accepted SPQA’s recognition of participation on behalf of VHHA. VHHA is a trade association of Virginia hospitals. It seeks to transform Virginia’s health care system to achieve top-tier performance in safety, quality, value, service, and population health. Leadership is focused on improving access to care; continuing to improve health care safety, quality, and service; promoting a vibrant, high-value health care system; and, advancing population health to promote health and economic opportunity for all Virginians.
One organization was recognized in the jointly operated SPQA-Commonwealth of Virginia Ones to Watch (OTW) program. OTW assists small businesses in completing a level of the Baldrige Performance Excellence Framework (BPEF). Businesses are selected by the Commonwealth’s Small Business and Supplier Diversity department with funding that provides for mentoring support. BPEF is a nationally recognized business model for continuous quality improvement and performance excellence.
- The Service Company of Virginia, Inc., is a Class A Contractor in all trades and offers a single source solution for commercial and residential clients and the flexibility to provide any number of qualified service technicians for electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, refrigeration and/or construction services. Mike Young, President and CEO, accepted the award recognizing the organization’s participation in the Commonwealth’s Ones to Watch program designed for small businesses.
